January 2025 is coming in hot!
Cue the month when we're all bombarded with ads for gym memberships, juice cleanses, and social media posts saying how horrible 2024 was and how 2025 is going to be so different.
If you want to talk to me about pet peeves, social media posts about the previous year being a dumpster fire and setting January resolutions are top of my list. That may make me sound like a Negative Nelly, but let me explain.
First of all, mindset is king. If all you see coming out of 2024 are all the bad things that happened, all you're going to see in 2025 are the bad things that will inevitably happen. Expect good. Expect growth. Seek joy. You will always find what you're looking for. Bad things will happen, but those are moments of experience and opportunities for learning and growth. Take a minute to do a little mindset check and see where you're at. Pro tip: If you want better health, start with a better mindset.
I'm headed into 2025 thinking “New Year, Same Me”, and it's gonna be awesome. Look, I'm not against setting goals or striving to be better - it's kind of my thing, actually. But if you ask me, real change doesn't happen with making resolutions that barely outlast your holiday leftovers. I actually find myself in a constant state of self improvement - year round. January 1st has never been the magical day when I decide to reinvent myself. And I don't think you should do that either. You're probably already pretty awesome.
But I know we all want to be better. We want to feel better, look better, have better relationships, improve our pickle ball skills, etc, etc. That's a good thing! We should all be striving to be better every day of the year! I think a big part of our earthly experience is simply improving who we are on all levels. But big overhauls starting January 1st aren't really the best way to go about that. The statistics have proven that - showing that most people have completely given up on their new year resolutions not even two weeks in.
And yet a new year certainly feels like a really good time for a fresh start. I can get on board with that.
So what's the solution? What do I recommend?
Well, first of all, I'm a strong believer in you doing you. If making big resolutions is something you enjoy, go for it! Even if it only sticks for 2 weeks. That's 2 weeks of learning what works and what might not work so well. Definitely beneficial, no matter what.
For me, I have really enjoyed choosing a ‘word of the year’ the last several years. I choose a word that feels powerful to me for my own purposes, but also a word that has been helpful in my parenting efforts, and speaks to my young son as well. I write the word at the top of my white board in my office so I see it often throughout the year and I talk to my son about it frequently. For two years in a row our word was “capable”, and last year it was “discipline”. I can confidently say that focusing on the power of a single word throughout the year has been beneficial for my family. “Capable” was such a powerful word in our home that I used it two years in a row. I'm still working out what my word will be for 2025, but it'll be something having to do with habits, as that's going to be a big focus for me this year.
And speaking of habits - due to the way I learn and how my mind works, from a young age, I have always looked for ways to break habits and goals down to what I call “stupid simple”. If I can't make something stupid simple, I'm just not going to do it. It's very likely the biggest reason why I've never been a fan of big new year goals. Big has never worked for me, and instead of trying then feeling like a failure, I just avoid big goals altogether. Might not be what all the gurus recommend, but it's kept me happy enough. Ha!
As you may be aware, earlier this year I embarked upon, and completed a new certification for Sleep, Stress, and Recovery. Within my certification course, I was introduced to a book called “Tiny Habits” by BJ Fogg. Now, I read "Atomic Habits" years ago, and though I honestly can't remember the process that James Clear recommends (which tells me that although I remember thinking it was a good book, it wasn't something I was super excited about), I would imagine the process is fairly similar. In the last several months I have been studying and geeking out on “Tiny Habits”, and it's something I'm really excited about teaching you and doing along side with you. 'Tiny’ is exactly the kind of goals I prefer, and I think tiny goals are exactly what you should be making if you want to make them last for more than two weeks.
So my next big project is to create a course on habit change. I'm excited to incorporate this into my GLP-1 Done Right course because while I feel GLP-1 is such a powerful tool, you'll be so much better off in the long run if you can align your lifestyle with the healthy habits that will keep your body happy with or without GLP-1 medication.
But unfortunately, I won't be ready to start teaching you habit magic on January 1st. Cause if you want to talk about dumpster fires of 2024, I've had a few in the last couple of months and I just have to roll with it and say 'I'm running behind schedule'. Like, really behind schedule. And I'm totally okay with that, so I hope you can be totally okay with it too.
So after all the new year fluff settles, and your Christmas decorations are all put away (okay, when MY Christmas decorations are all put away), keep an eye out for some exciting new things! Those that are in my GLP-1 Done Right membership will be the first to know when my habit course is ready and will be able to access it immediately.
But for now, I hope you had a very happy Christmas and I hope that 2025 will bring you joy and growth! I hope you have been as blessed as I have to be able to spend time with loved ones and reflect on the blessings life can bring. Thank you for allowing me into your email and giving me your time. I hope to be able to bless your life by sharing my knowledge and helping you become a better version of yourself tomorrow than you were yesterday.
