I was skewered by an aebleskiver turner

Jab, cross, hook!

I was facing off with the evil Velzo (as he calls himself), prepared to use all my ninja skills. Running around the kitchen island - uppercut! Uppercut!

But Velzo had his one-of-a-kind sword.. stabber.. thing (made from a piece of house trim with aebleskiver turners taped to the end...essentially a wooden stick with sharper wooden sticks attached) and he knew how to use it. Then he told me how predictable I was and that I was no match for him.

Predictable, eh? Wait until I pull out the big guns.

The Karate Kid Move.

The wind up was epic. The kick, pathetic.

And knowing he could defeat me, Velzo jabbed at the perfect moment.

My foot took the hit. I shook it off. Until an hour later when I discovered I had in fact been skewered.

Limping to my husband, I made him put some ointment on the wound (because why not take full advantage of getting a foot rub and some sympathy... or accolades for being the better parent... at the same time?), and I affixed a simple bandaid.

All better.

(I'll get to my point in just a second 😂, but for the record... my 12 year old feels horrible and it was 100% my fault. Laughs were laughed, hugs were hugged, and I would do it again in a heartbeat because my son loves it when I play make-believe with him)

So what is my point?

Well, I now have a wound on my foot. However, my body is so incredible that I only need to give this wound some simple and basic inputs in order for it to heal (keep it from getting dirty, and be careful not to create a bigger injury by walking on rocks, for example. Or being stabbed again. Things like that.)

The body knows exactly what to do! It's amazing! The body WANTS to heal. And when we provide our body with the right inputs, it is fully capable of healing all on its own.

Some years ago, I broke my ankle into several pieces. I needed surgery to help my bone heal properly, so now I have a plate and 6 screws that live inside my leg. But once my body had the assistance of the plate and screws, it took over with the healing process and fused bone and regrew skin. Incredible.

So yes, sometimes we need to offer some additional assistance to help the body along - like surgery, plates and screws, or even medications or supplements. (I'd put an astirisk on medications, but I'm not going to go there in this email. 😉)

But when we provide our body with what it needs to heal, and we get out of its way, the body is capable of incredible things.

When I broke my ankle, I had to stay off that foot for several weeks. Had I started putting my weight on that bone before it was healed, I would have slowed the process down greatly, or even caused additional problems.

Just like if I were to take my bandaid off my foot and go walk in the rocks. I would risk infection or tearing into the injured skin, creating a bigger wound and slowing the healing time.

But with the right inputs, the body will heal.

We're living in a world where we're bombarded by less than ideal inputs. Not to mention all the confusion and misinformation within the health and nutrition realm.

Actually, I will mention that.

The health and nutrition space is freaky confusing. If you read comments on some FB posts, well heck, everyone is an expert these days. And they're all saying completely different things. But even amongst the true experts, one PhD will tell you one thing while another will tell you the opposite. And they all have "good science" to back it up.

In 1998, in an effort to overcome my new diagnosis of PCOS, I started diving into researching health. Back in the day, before the internet was much of a thing, I had to actually read the books. I would read whatever I could get my hands on - including things like the DSM IV. My obsession was born.

But that didn't prevent me from being completely misguided and confused by all the so-called experts out there. Even my nutrition certification course has contradictions in it that raised an eyebrow and led me to more research.

But in the whirlwind of confusion, thinking I was doing everything right but still losing my gall bladder when - holy cow was I trying to save that thing - I decided to take a big step back and look at the body as a whole and really dig into the basics.

Asking questions like: What actually happens during digestion? What does the body actually do with the food we eat? Why is low carb recommended when everything tells us the body prefers carbs as fuel? And if carbs are causing insulin resistance, why have they used high fat diets to create insulin resistance in lab rats for decades? (All these questions are answered in GLP-1 Done Right, by the way)

Look, I think most of those "experts" have good intentions. I certainly did when I would tell people to eat low carb.

But if you're like me, and you feel like you've tried just about everything and you're now blaming your body for being different and not working like it's supposed to,

I can tell you that you probably haven't been giving your body the right inputs.

And all this time your body has been trying its hardest to do the right thing, but progress has been slowed because it keeps getting the wrong inputs.

And while I'm all for taking personal responsibility, there's no way this is all your fault. I know you've been trying to do everything right, just like me! We were just led down the wrong path.

Eventually, things start to break down. Wounds become bigger. Infection rages, and you need to bring in the plates and screws to hold things together so they can be fixed right.

GLP-1 medications are incredible "plates and screws". They have their own healing power and can do so many things to help your body let go of inflammation, fix your cells, and patch things back together.

But you still need to give your body the right inputs. If you're still eating low carb, high fat, high protein, you're working against the efforts of GLP-1 and your body.

Low carb makes you insulin resistant. Period. It also prevents your body from building muscle properly, storing and using energy, and creates all sorts of harmful by-products your liver has to deal with.

The only way to retrain your cells to utilize carbs properly is by giving them carbs, not taking them away. You can do that alone with the right strategy, but GLP-1 meds can help you with that retraining process in a quick and impressive way.

Just like my ankle bone no longer needs the plate and screws to be "normal" and healthy (it's a big deal to get them removed, so they're still there, but rest assured my body is mad about it), GLP-1 is a tool that may or may not be needed long term.

It feels like a magical pill (injection) - and if you've had chronic weight issues or have dealt with things like PCOS, it really is pretty magical - but if it's used the wrong way (to starve yourself, for example), you'll just be continuing to poke the stick into the injury.

I don't pretend to have it all figured out. But if you want to find long-term health, I teach you the best parts of everything I've learned over the last 27 years in GLP-1 Done Right.

And if you know you need to do things better but you struggle to get them done (oh hi! that's me too), I'm launching Healthy Habits Done Right where I will help you create simple habits that feel totally doable and will lead to big changes over time.

The beta testing period begins this coming Monday, January 27th, 2025 and I'd love for you to participate!!

Just send me an email with "I want to beta test" and I'll add you to the list and let you in on all the details in the next few days. All you need to be a beta tester is to have current access to GLP-1 Done Right.
